    late in answering

    Which are correct:

    1) I was late answering his question.

    2) I was late in answering his question.
    3) I was late to answer his question.

    I don't think '3' works.

    3 doesn't work. I prefer 1.
    Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.
