In what context would you want to say that a/the couple are 'doing it'?

Anything like "I saw a couple in a garden, they were singing a song or the couple was singing a song?"

It really is time you stopped running sentences together. What is the point of our telling you things if you ignore us?

I saw a couple in a garden. They were singing (a song).

Okay, two people cannot be considered as one unit. Plural verb should be used.

"There was a couple in the party. I hadn't seen them before."
