Question A starfish sees with a spot on the tip of each arm.

    Hi there,

What is an appropriate synonym for the word "spot" in the sentence below? I mean the set of words in 1 or 2?

"A starfish sees with a spot on the tip of each arm."

    1. Position, situation, place, point, location
    2. Mark, stain, dot

Where did you find that sentence? "Sees with X" means "uses X to see." I would have expected "eye" to be in among those choices.

This sentence has been appeared in a reading course book for university students. You mean we cannot use "spot"? I just want to know a synonym for the word "spot" in this context.

"Point" would be the best choice out of those in your original post.

They are called 'eyespots' or 'eye-spots'.

Excuse me, at the end of the passage in which the above mentioned sentence has been appeared there is a exercise in which the readers are supposed to find words in the story that mean:

    1. End of something:
    2. Place, part:
    etc.

So, I wonder if these two words, i.e. Place, part can be considered as appropriate synonyms for the word "spot" as well?
