Please click on "Edit Post" and add spaces between words where necessary.
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.

    Re: number/amount

    The first is incorrect.
The second, third, and fourth are correct.
    The last two are incorrect.

Write A huge number of invitations has been sent. The verb is singular to agree with "huge number", which is singular.

'Land' is uncountable. Why do we 'use' 'are'?

As you said "Write A huge number of invitations has been sent. The verb is singular to agree with "huge number", which is singular."

    How about the following rules?

Use a singular verb after the number of :
The number of farmers is decreasing.
You are talking about the size of the group.
Use a plural verb after a number of :
A number of options were suggested.

    Re: number/amount

Amount is countable, and it's the subject. Leave out the qualifier of land and the agreement should be clear: Small amounts are used.

Longman's rule looks good to me.
