    tortured

They recently released some of their hostages. Sadly, they all looked like they got/were/have been/had been tortured during their time in the jungle.

Which one is right, 'got', 'were', 'have been' or 'had been' tortured?

    Re: tortured

Either 'were' or 'had been' would be acceptable.

    Re: tortured

I agree that 'were' is possible, but I would use the past perfect here. If this is a test question, then that is what the teacher/examiner may insist (wrongly) is the only correct answer.

As we often say in this forum, when context makes it clear that one past action precedes another, the past perfect is rarely essential. I would choose it here to to emphasise that their ordeal was over.

    Re: tortured

Only the past perfect works there for me.
    I am not a teacher.

    Re: tortured

I'd use the past perfect too.
