    Article before uncountable word

    Hi teacher ,

Can you please explain why there is an article before the word dominant in the sentence below?

There should not be an article as dominant is an uncountable word. This sentence was in the newspaper.

"Most people have a dominant motivational focus"

    Re: Article before uncountable word

Your edit actually made the font so large it was equally difficult to read because it messed up the formatting. I've sorted it out for you.

The word "dominant" has nothing to do with the article. The relevant word is "focus", which is countable.
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.

Dominant is an adjective. Countability is a property of nouns.

Ask How can "focus" be countable?

Focus is a countable noun in geometry. It can also be countable in a more general context: Grammar is one focus of the Using English forum.
