    AE Abbreviation

    Hi!
What does AE stand for, in the following passage?

Roman Empire - Alexandria Troas, Pseudo-autonomous issue, AE 21 mm, late 2nd - early 3rd century AD.

It is specification of an ancient coin. AE seemingly means "diameter" but I could not find this meaning for it in abbreviation dictionaries.
    Thanks very much.

    Re: AE Abbreviation

Ancient Egypt? I don't think it means diameter.

    PS: I don't think it's 'AE'

    Re: AE Abbreviation

I was looking for something like that. But I kept getting the AE digraph.

    Re: AE Abbreviation

My success was pure luck. I was searching intermittently from the time the question was first posted. I couldn't find anything helpful, even in lists of numismatic abbreviations. On what was going to be my last search, that page suddenly came up. I can't remember exactly what words I had entered.
