    belong out (baseball)

John hits well but is not good at fielding batted balls. The rest of the team think he belongs out in left field, and that is where he is playing in this game against the Wildcats. (Basic Geometry, page 5)

What does the phrasal verb belong out mean in the above passage?
    I need native speakers' help.

    Re: belong out (baseball)

The rest of the team thinks that left field is the best place for John; it's the place where he belongs. Adding out reinforces the distance of his position from the rest of the team.

If he's not good at fielding, though, right field would be the likeliest place the team would put him. That's where baseball teams usually put their worst fielders.

Because left-handed batters naturally hit more balls to right field. And there are fewer left-handed batters, especially on amateur levels.

    Re: belong out (baseball)

It's not a phrasal verb to me- it means that this is the position they think he should be in. It is (he belongs) (out in leftfield).
