    Because we got this thing above us. Rain can't go through rock.

    I was driving with my three year old son when it started to rain.

    Son: It's starting to rain.

    Me: Yes. I'd better turn the wipers on.

    We then drove into a basement parking.

    Son: It stopped raining.

    Me: No, it still is... outside. In here, it's not.

    Son: Why?

    Me: Because we got this, um, thing, above us. I mean, we're covered. Rain can't go through, um, rock.

    I need help with the last phrase. How would native speakers respond?
    Not a teacher.

    You could say "There's a whole building above us that's blocking the rain."
    I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.

    Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.
