by completing the level 3 course or granting him the first aid certificate

Yesterday after work, my friends, coworkers and I talked about the following two sentences. We agreed that they were grammatically correct.

    (1) I received another First Aid certificate by completing the level 3 course.

    (2) I completed the level 3 course, granting me another First Aid certificate.

Because English is not our first language, we don't see anything wrong in grammar. Are there any grammar mistakes in the sentences? Please help us. Thanks a lot.
