Question concerning the difference between 's- and of- genitive

I once learnt that the of-genitive cannot be used for persons, i. e. one is not allowed to say "The book of Mary" but "Mary's book". Is this separation still there or has it become obsolete? Am I allowed to say things like "the work of the team"?

Re: Question concerning the difference between 's- and of- genitive

It's not as simple as that.

We do not say "the book of Mary" but we sometimes use the double genitive: A friend of Mary's, a classmate of John's.
We certainly use it with nouns versus proper names: the work of the team has been recognized as world-class.

If you have a few sentences you're not sure about, you can post them. It's more a matter of what is natural than what is correct.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.

Thanks a lot - the phrase that was intriguing me was actually "the work of the team" :)
