Why so funny of this joke?

Ole and Sven are out hunting in Minnesota and they shoot a deer. They begin dragging the deer back to the truck by the tail, but they keep slipping and losing both their grip and their balance.

A farmer comes along and asks them, “What are you boys doing?”

They reply, “We’re dragging the deer back to the truck.”

The farmer tells them, “You are not supposed to drag a deer by the tail. You’re supposed to drag the deer by the handles. They’re called antlers. You’re supposed to drag a deer by the antlers.”

Ole an Sven say, “Thank you very much for the idea.”

They begin pulling the deer by the antlers. After about five minutes, they are making rapid progress. Ole says to Sven, “Sven, the farmer was right. It goes a lot easier by the antlers.”

Sven replies, “Yeah, but we’re getting farther and farther from the truck.”

Re: Why so funny of this joke?

You have to picture the scene to work out why it's funny. The two boys have taken the advice literally and have moved to the other end of the dead deer to start pulling it by the antlers. However, they failed to turn the deer around so that they were still walking towards the truck. The antlers are at the opposite end of the animal from the tail so when they stopped pulling it by the tail and simply moved to pull it by the antlers, they ended up pulling it in the wrong direction.

In my opinion, it's not particularly funny.

Re: Why so funny of this joke?

Ole and Lena jokes are an entire genre of jokes particular to people of Scandinavian American heritage, and to the Upper Midwest area of the U.S. They're kind of like knock-knock jokes, in that you appreciate them not so much for the actual wit, but for how bad or corny they are.

Ole is rather dimwitted, so the skill in telling the joke isn't so much about how funny the joke is, but how naive and dense you can make Ole appear.

Ah, like "Pepe from Lepe" jokes in Spain! And "An Englishman, an Irishman and a Scotsman ..." jokes here.

Re: Why so funny of this joke?

Ole and Lena got married. On their honeymoon trip they were nearing Minneapolis when Ole put his hand on Lena's knee. Lena Said, "Ole, you can go farther if ya vant to"... so Ole drove to Duluth.

Lena sent Ole to a sex therapist and Ole came home and went out to the barn and he was singing a love song to his John Deere because the therapist said, "You've got to do something sexy to attract her."

A surveyor came and did a new survey of Ole's farm in southern Minnesota and discovered that the farm was actually in Iowa, which pleased Ole ---- he would never have to go through another of those terrible Minnesota winters!
