What does "to represent" mean in plagiarism?

According to the website en.wikipedia, plagiarism is the act stealing another author's language, thoughts, ideas or expressions and representing them as one' own original work.

I know the verb to represent means to speak or to act for someone. It also means to stand for something. Neither of these two meanings fits the definition of plagiarism.

What does "to represent" mean in this context? Thanks.

It means to make others believe, to put it forward as such.

It also means "to present, or re-present" which, of course, it is.
