    We can thank the Mexicans.

Do you like chocolate? Its in candy, cake and bread, and we have chocolate drinks too. Its sweet and delicious.
We can thank the Mexicans. They discovered cacao seeds. ...

I think we can also use should to replace the red can. If so, I wonder which word is used more commonly in that case.
    Thanks.

Re: We can thank the Mexicans.

"Should" works but it implies obligation. The phrase "You can thank ... for that" is a common phrase in BrE.

Re: We can thank the Mexicans.

We can thank the Mexicans if we find it necessary to thank anybody for chocolate.

I can't help feeling that if they hadn't discovered it, somebody else would have done so long ago.

Re: We can thank the Mexicans.

Another way of saying it in BrE is "We have the Mexicans to thank for that".

Re: We can thank the Mexicans.

Incidentally, it wasn't the Mexicans, it was the Aztecs or possibly other Mesoamericans, who were indigenous to the area.

There were no Mexicans (officially) until 1810. The earliest forms of fermented chocolate beverages were brewed around 1900 BC.

Re: We can thank the Mexicans.

Note also that this expression of 'we can thank X for Y' is sometimes used sarcastically, meaning we can blame X for Y.

However, that's not how it's being used in this example.
