    Subject- verb agreement

I was writing a short essay, and suddenly got confused. I'd appreciate your help. I wasn't sure which of these was correct:

    a) School uniforms are a commonly discussed topic.
    b) School uniforms is a commonly discussed topic.

    Re: Subject- verb agreement

You could make a case for 'School uniforms' being a topic, and for using 'is'. I, personally would go for 'are'.
