Meter baza

Hello everyone,

In Spain we have the expression " meter baza" when there is a problem caused by someone and there is another person who starts saying things so the problem gets bigger and bigger so thet the originator of the problem gets in trouble.

Here there is an example : I broke the table in the living room and my little brother "was metiendo baza" so my parents punished me.

I would just say that your little brother made it worse. You could say that he "added fuel to the fire".

I think in English the sense is: my little brother wouldn't shut up about it, I.e. he went on and on about it.

In the U.S. we might say that it snowballed. Snowballs get bigger as they roll along. We make snowmen by rolling small snowballs into big ones.

So when a situation is getting bigger and bigger, we say it's snowballing.

In the U.S., that would mean inspiring or rousing. We'd say stirring up trouble.
