For whatever reason this exists ...... meaning

    Hello everybody!

But to some people, their closeness creates intolerable anxiety. For whatever reason this exists, here is a typical example of an encounter in the hope it will help to relieve the fear.

Does "For whatever reason this exists" mean "no matter why this exists" or "regardless of why this exists"?

    What do you think?

    Thank you.

Both of your translations are good. It's not a well-written passage, but you're reading it correctly.
I'm not a teacher. I speak American English. I've tutored writing at the University of Southern Maine and have done a good deal of copy editing and writing, occasionally for publication.
