He used to play chess before when he ...

He used to play chess before when he was in 8th grade(or class).

Please tell me if the above sentence is correct and natural.
P.S. Please correct any errors above.

I would use either 'before' or ' when' but not both.

He used to play chess before, when he was in the 8th grade.

If you add a comma there, it looks much better.
    What do you think?

The definite article you added is optional.

Re: He used to play chess before when he ...

The intended meaning is: prior to his 8th grade, he used to play chess. Is the original sentence correct in that context?
P.S. Please correct any errors above.

Also, please tell me why is "the" optional. There can only be one 8th grade. Isn't it a must, then?
P.S. Please correct any errors above.

    In that case, you write:
He used to play chess before when he was in 8th grade(or class).

I think the definite article is optional with certain special nouns e.g. Eiffel Tower or the Eiffel Tower, Grand Canyon or the Grand Canyon.
It seems there is no definite rule to this.

When you use 'when', it does not mean 'prior to'. That's why the perceived meaning in post #3 is different from your intended meaning.
