Smile the city meeting with doctors

Hello. Would you please tell me what 'city meeting with doctors' in the context below?
Is it just a meeting with doctors in the city for patients who live in the country?
    Thank you.

I did meet one of Auggie's friends once, though. A kid named Hudson. He had a different syndrom than Auggie has. His eyes were spaced very far apart, and kind of bulged out a bit. He and his parents were staying with Auggie's family for a couple of days while they were in the city meeting with doctors at Auggie's hospital.

It could be that the closest doctors are in the city, or it could be that there are doctors in the country but Auggie needs specialists who can be found only in the city.
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.

Not at all. I am sure that some native speakers would have read it in the same way.

A comma would have removed any ambiguity: they were in the city, meeting with doctors.
    I am not a teacher.
