    christmas hat

Which one is correct and why?

    There's a photo showing him...

    1 ...wear a christmas hat.
    2 ...wearing a christmas hat.

    Re: christmas hat

Neither is correct because "Christmas" is a proper noun and must be capitalized.

2 would be correct otherwise because "him wear" is not grammatical at all.

    Re: christmas hat

    How about
3 ...to be wearing a Christmas hat.
4 ...appearing to be wearing a Christmas hat.

    ?
3 and 4 are grammatically acceptable in a pinch. Number 3 can be pruned back down to number 2 with no change in meaning. If you want to say number 4, you should find a shorter way to express the idea. It's too wordy.
