    Question help about "It seems to me to be an almost axiomatic truth of human nature...."

    Hi, Please help to understand the meaning of the following sentence
    "It seems to me to be an almost axiomatic truth of human nature that no peace, should it ever be established, will survive beliefs of this sort for very long."

    It means that when a large number of people believe it is OK to bomb innocent people because of their beliefs, that any "peace" is temporary.

    It means that the author believes that it's nearly certain that people could not live peacefully, for a long time, in a society where the kind of beliefs he or she is writing about were widely held.

    Good question!

    Are you struggling with the phrase "an almost axiomatic truth"?

    If you are, look up "axiom."

    This is a good example of bad English. The writer is trying to make the word "truth" stronger by hanging a fancy adjective on it (and then make it weaker with "almost"!). But an axiom isn't necessarily true and the following phrases and too wordy to be axioms.
    I'm not a teacher. I speak American English. I've tutored writing at the University of Southern Maine and have done a good deal of copy editing and writing, occasionally for publication.
