Peter left in a hurry after hanging up the phone.

Peter left in a hurry after hanging up the phone. (Ivy magazine)
Is "hanging up the phone" correct? According to the Oxford Dictionary, "hang up" is a set phrasal verb, which means to end a telephone conversation, and the phrase doesn't need any object. But in the sentence I gave, the phone is the object of hanging up. Is it OK? Thanks!

Re: Peter left in a hurry after hanging up the phone.

"To hang up (the phone)" originated in the days when telephone receivers had an eye and bases had a hook from which to hang them. This is also where we get the expression "off the hook" for a phone that hasn't been hung up properly.
