How do you feel about using portfolios for the assessment of ELL students as opposed to standardized testing. Please give me some input on the advantages/disadvantages to doing so. Thanks!
Portfolios
Portfolios are purposeful collections of student work. They can include any number of things such as reports, projects, notes, assessments, art, journals, exercises, and recordings. They are purposeful, expressive, develop over time, demonstrate achievement, and keep learners and teachers accountable to the development of skills over time. Portfolios are amazing because they allow learners to own their learning and show evidence of their work and learning development. The challenge is that they are time consuming and take a lot of effort to create. They are worth the effort to take the time to do them with your students. As a quality form of an alternate assessment, this is a more flexible way to demonstrate learning.
