    Hello!
Next year’s investment of £350 million by TFL (next) will refurbish several tube stations.
What is the function of ("next" ) here??

    Thanks alot.

I have no idea. In what context did you read this sentence?

    Re: Structure of a sentence

If you've quoted the sentence exactly as it was published, "next" in parentheses is an editing error.

    Re: Structure of a sentence

    It's wrong.
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.

The brackets did not appear in the original. Please don't add things to sentences you are asking about.

Actually it was on a site which the site you mentioned provided a link to: http://aeo.sllf.qmul.ac.uk/. Please provide accurate links, as some of us like to confirm what was said in the original source.

Congratulations on finding the test question, which is Next year’s __________ of £350 million by TFL next will refurbish several tube stations. The only possible answer, from the words given at the top, is investment. The word "next" following TFL is clearly an editing error.

What is the function of ("next"[no space]) here?

    Thanks a lot.
You have the word next twice there. Which one are your wondering about? The first one means the year after this year:

    - last year = 2015
    - this year = 2016
    - next year = 2017
    - the year after next = 2018

The second next, in parentheses, makes no sense to me. Maybe it means something to the British.
I'm not a teacher. I speak American English. I've tutored writing at the University of Southern Maine and have done a good deal of copy editing and writing, occasionally for publication.

We have already said, in posts 3, 5 and 8, that it is an error.
