    and that

Hi guys. I have encountered an English cloze question like this:

.... Despite this, researchers have indicated the local climate in certain area might be the primary factor behind the UHI (Urban Heat Island) effect _________ the local climate's interaction with various factors, including evaporation, the heat generated by humans as well as the heat stored by cities.

The options of the answer are
    A) and
    B) by which
    C) and that
    D) where

The correct answer is ' C) and that', but I don't quite understand why and the purpose of the 'that' in here.
    Thanks in advance!

    Re: and that

It isn't a good question IMO, and I don't agree with the correct answer given. There are mistakes like certain area, rather than certain areas, so are these mistakes in the original or in the typing? If they are in the original, then I think the question is flawed.

"Despite this, researchers have indicated that the local climate in certain area might be the primary factor behind the UHI (Urban Heat Island) effect _and that_the local climate's interaction..."

It would make more sense if they included the first 'that', which has been ellipsed out. But it still doesn't make sense elsewhere.

    Re: and that

Once area is corrected to areas, only A is possible.
