    awaiting his girlfriend

    John is awaiting the reply.
    John is awaiting his girlfriend.

    Hi,
Do both of the above sound right? If not, can you explain why? Thanks.

    Re: awaiting his girlfriend

    They're both fine.
I'm not a teacher. I speak American English. I've tutored writing at the University of Southern Maine and have done a good deal of copy editing and writing, occasionally for publication.

    Re: awaiting his girlfriend

While await isn't wrong, it's not used very often. It would be much more natural to write John is waiting for the reply.
    I am not a teacher.
