    It took Peter years to overcome

    I am wondering about my sentence and if I have punctuated it correctly. I think that the second part is non-defining. Would you please correct my mistakes?

    It took Peter years to overcome the loss of his wife, who had died of breast cancer.

    The punctuation looks right to me, but I don't like the verb overcome there. I think to recover from works better.
    I am not a teacher.
