While I lived on budget food

I am wondering if my sentence sounds natural. Is my punctuation correct?

While I lived on budget food, my friend Peter and his wife were buying exclusively choice food and the best wines.

Now let's see what others think. Your punctuation is good.
I'm not a teacher. I speak American English. I've tutored writing at the University of Southern Maine and have done a good deal of copy editing and writing, occasionally for publication.

I agree with Charlie's use of the word "cheap". My feeling is that "buying" and "exclusively" were placed in the wrong order in the original sentence. The word "delicacies" was introduced to avoid the repetition of "food".

    Eckaslike,
    Thank you for your help.
I am wondering if your version would still be correct if delete the last part, "that money could buy"?

While I lived on cheap food, my friend Peter and his wife were exclusively buying the choicest delicacies and the best wines.
