They had a good time playing basketball on the playground.

They had a good time playing basketball on the playground.
In this sentence, I think playing basketball on the playground is attributive, which modifies time. What do you say?
    Thanks.

I don't think it modifies time. It just says how they had a good time.
I'm not a teacher. I speak American English. I've tutored writing at the University of Southern Maine and have done a good deal of copy editing and writing, occasionally for publication.

    Thanks, Charlie.
I wonder if a preposition is omitted before playing basketball. If so, is it a by?
    Thanks again.

No. The sentence is fine as it is.

I wonder how to ask questions about this sentence. For example, can I ask ‘how did they spend the time’ or 'what did they do just now'?
    Thanks in advance.

Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.
