... since he knew it was that

    Hello everyone,

I am having difficulties in grasping the meaning of the following sentence, which is taken from Edith Wharton's The Age of Innocence. Here it is:

"How this miracle of fire and ice was to be created, and to sustain itself in a harsh world, he had never taken the time to think out; but he was content to hold his view without analysing it, since he knew it was that of all the carefully-brushed, white-waistcoated, buttonhole-flowered gentlemen who succeeded each other in the club box, exchanged friendly greetings with him, and turned their opera-glasses on the circle of ladies who were the product of the system."

Now, if one takes a look at the section in bold - am I mistaken in thinking that it appears that something is missing after the "that"? I kept thinking that this that needs to be followed by something. Or is it just a confirmation of what's been said in the first part of the sentence? This is confusing to me, and your feedback on this is more than appreciated. 😀

    Thanks a lot!

    I.

since he knew it was that of - since
(because, as) he knew that it (his view) was that (the view) of

The only thing 'missing. is the optional subordinator that after knew. The that in the original means the one (the view).

Exactly. Nothing is missing. The that you're asking about is a pronoun. It's standing in for view.

His view is the same as the view of those carefully-brushed gentlemen. His view is that of those carefully-brushed gentlemen.

I have changed your thread title so that it refers specifically to the words you are asking us about. Titles should include some/all of the words/phrases you are querying.
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.
