Commas before and after names revisited

Typical, I look something up, register to comment and then find the thread is closed. Re-opening the discussion held some years ago seems my only option. The question was does this sentence require commas:

    1. My boyfriend, Tobias, called me today.
    2. My boyfriend Tobias called me today.

Most people felt it did, but some seemed to be saying that in this case it made little difference. I'm only an amateur writer, but I disagree with that view. The version without commas has 'My boyfriend' as a modifier rather than the subject. The two sentences mean something significantly different in my opinion. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.
No.1 is referring to my one and only boyfriend, who is named Tobias. No.2 is referring to my boyfriend Tobias as opposed to my boyfriend Fred.
