    People asked David how come

I am wondering if my sentences sound natural. Would you please correct my mistakes? I have used "make", the present, instead of the past, because the condition still exists.

People asked David how come he worked for so many years in the same company. He replied that it was because of his kind colleagues who make him feel at home.

    Is this better:

People asked David how come he worked he could work for so many years in the same company.
    I am not a teacher.

It's possible but it isn't better and it doesn't mean exactly the same thing.
    I am not a teacher.
