    soccer

Is the word "soccer" (=football) exclusively used in the USA or also in other English speaking countries like maybe Canada, Australia, Philippines, Hongkong, etc.?

    Re: soccer

It originated in England at a time when words were commonly shortened and altered a bit to make slangy version of them. The game was (and still is) officially called association football; "association" was altered into soccer. Americans already had a game called "football" when the English game crossed the pond, so only the slangy name soccer was used over here.

I believe soccer appears fairly often, though much less than "football", in British usage. What say our British denizens?

I've heard that "soccer" is used in Ireland to distinguish the game from Gaelic Football, and also in Australia to distinguish it from Australian Rules Football.
