assert oneself at the expense of older points of view.

"assertin itself at the expense of older points of view" part seems very complex to me.

During the past three centuries, the cosmology derived from science has been asserting itself at the expense of older points of view with their origins elsewhere.

What does it mean by assertin itself at the expense of older points of view" ?

Assert: To put oneself forth forcefully, become aggressive. [Newbury House]

    Thank you.

The older points of view have fallen out of favor.

Does it also mean that "Cosmology proved itself agains the older points of views" or "cosmology proved its worth in spite of those older points of view" ?

    Thank you.

Re: assert oneself at the expense of older points of view.

The newer ideas proved to be more workable than the older ones. The newer ones became more and more accepted, and the older ones were abandoned.

Re: assert oneself at the expense of older points of view.

    P.S. It's "points of view".
