(in) how many novels does this character appear (in)?

Hello! Can you help me, please?

"IN how many novels does this character appear (IN)?"

I'd say "IN how many...", but I'm wondering if the other option could be considered as correct, too. What would you prefer? Are they both correct? Thanks a lot in advance!

Both versions are correct. Some readers might find the first version more elegant. I prefer the second, which is, I think, easier to read and understand.

In how many novels does this character appear?
    or
How many novels does this character appear in?

But the structure below would be incorrect.
In how many novels does this character appear in?

I would go further and say the first version sounds awkward.
The "rule" about not ending a sentence with a preposition can be safety ignored.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
