didn't have or don't have enough accounting experience

I am going to write down an example from my own experience below.

(ex) Three weeks ago, I applied for an accounting job. After two weeks, I called the company about the status of my application. The manager didn't interview me because I didn't have or don't have enough accounting experience.

I think it could be either tense. I can use the simple past "didn't have" because all of my sentences are in that tense. I think the simple present "don't have" also works because I still lack the necessary experience.

Can someone please explain this? Thanks a lot.

    Your reasoning is correct.
