One of the reasons for his failure

I am wondering if my sentence sounds natural. Would you please correct my mistakes?

One of the reasons for his failure with women John attributed to his inability to articulate his feelings.

It doesn't work for me. I don't think you can attribute a reason to something.

Re: One of the reasons for his failure

Would my sentence be correct if I rephrase it like this:

One of the causes for his failure with women John attributed to his inability to articulate his feelings.

Re: One of the reasons for his failure

That corrects the logical error in the first sentence. It would be more natural to begin with John though:

Among other things, John attributed his failure with women to his inability to articulate his feelings.
