    the so-called

    Hi,

Is use of "the" in the following sentence correct grammatically and conceptually? If it is not , kindly suggest ways to make it clearer.

In Eq. 6, the term of S_gen also represents entropy generation by dissipation in the fluctuating part of flow field as follows:

This term is also the so-called indirect or turbulent dissipation.

    Re: the so-called

It looks correct to me, but what do I know about whatever that stuff is?

I think "the fluctuating part of the flow field" might be better. I know no more than does Rover_KE about it!

    Re: the so-called

Is there only one so-called indirect or turbulent dissipation? The use of the article suggests that, though I have no idea whether this is the case.

    Re: the so-called

I am a guy with recent experience of editing scientific and mathematical papers for their English.

According to the mathematical defintion of "term" S-gen is obviously a term, at least to readers who know enough mathematics to read equations. Therefore the "of" is at least unnatural and arguably incorrect. " Say "the term S-gen" rather than "the term of S-gen."

To return to your original question, the use of the definite article is fine, both conceptually and grammatically.

Also, teachar is right: the flow field.
