If the mountaineer did not have

I am wondering if my sentence sound natural. Would you please correct my mistakes?

    1. If the mountaineer did not have the right equipment, he would not have survived the storm.

or should it be with "had" instead like this:

    2. If the mountaineer had not had the right equipment, he would not have survived the storm.

Re: If the mountaineer did not have

    Sentence 2 is correct.

In sentence 1, the first clause is a simple past. It could be followed with he would not survive the storm.
