Why is the article located in this position?

The article "a" appears in the text as so...

Does reading for pleasure have a place in the modern world, or has it simply become too time consuming a pastime in the hustle and bustle of today?

Why isn't it located as follows...

Does reading for pleasure have a place in the modern world, or has it simply become a too time consuming pastime in the hustle and bustle of today?

I can't quite seem to explain it to a student of mine... Thanks!

Without too long an explanation, it's because of too, which takes this structure when used like that. It's the same with so.

    • too + adjective + a + noun

Re: Why is the article located in this position?

It's simply a case of keeping all the relevant words when reordering the sentence.

This is a pastime which has become too time-consuming in today's busy world.
In today's busy world, this has become too time-consuming a pastime.

We don't really use "too" in the "article/determiner + modifier + adjective + noun" construction.

This very beautiful woman [is actually a man].
The incredibly small house [is very cheap].
That too big shoe [belongs to my brother].
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.
