What is the exact meaning of "device" in the following passages? The passages are from a book about Archeology of Persia. I am looking for an exact synonym.

We may tentatively conclude that Achaemenid seals were without abbreviations, monograms, or even devices.
Similar crests or heraldic devices appear on helmets of nobles portrayed on seal impressions from the castle.
The device on that helmet may be just a rim decoration, although it may be a symbolic device rather than a crest.

    Thanks very much.

You'll be lucky to find an exact synonym.
