    run for presidency

"As early as 1943, many Americans expected Eisenhower to run for presidency of the United States." (My teacher's handout)
Is "to run for presidency" correct? I think we should add a THE before "presidency" or change the phrase into "to run for president"? Am I right? Thanks!

    Re: run for presidency

It would certainly sound better to me with the definite article before "presidency".
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.

Run for president is the natural way to say this.

In AmE yes, but not in all dialects.

    Re: run for presidency

It's OK in BrE. In which varieties is it not acceptable?
