    soul patch

I was googling for the term used to refer to the hair growing just below the lower lip and got soul patch. Is this a commonly used term? Like I can teach this to a child when he points to it and asks "What's that?"
    Not a teacher.

I don't think there are many people who know that term, which you have rightly given.
    I am not a teacher.

    Re: soul patch

A soul patch is a very small and narrow beard growing just below the lower lip and not extending to the chin at all. It is as if you cut Hitler's tiny mustache off his upper lip and pasted it back just below his lower lip. It is a fairly recent fashion, not in the last few months but in the last ten years or so.

Does it have any implications as a signal or sign of anything?

Your three-year-old son will be happy with 'whiskers'.

I'm 78 and only became aware of soul patch two years ago. I've never found it necessary to bring it up in conversation.

    Re: soul patch

It's fairly common usage in AmE, or at least as common as the need to talk about a particular style of facial hair can be. You'll sometimes see it in print when various celebrities adopt one.

Regarding Raymott's question regarding significance, I'm not aware of any. It seems to be popular with musicians and artists, or those that want to proclaim themselves as such. It seems to be in vogue with hipsters lately as well.

For what it's worth, this page claims to offer insight into the meaning of soul patches.

Well yes I think it does. It is a sign of coolness, something that none of us teachers are qualified to speak on these days, obviously.

    Re: soul patch

I was thinking of sporting one myself, but didn't want to give anyone the wrong message!
