    The murky waters

I have tried to used " murky waters" in my sentences. Would you please correct my mistakes?

    1. John was unassuming as a member of Parliament, but he made a great career in the murky waters of lobbying.
    2. In the murky waters of the international weapon trade, there will always be people ready to sell weapons even to the most oppressive regimes, if they get a chance to earn big money.

    Re: The murky waters

I like them both, but I would tweak the second one a bit. Put an "s" at the end of "weapon" and delete the comma after "regimes".

    Re: The murky waters

Was John unassuming or did he fail to make much of an impression? An unassuming politician could be successful if they knew how to manage things.

    Tdol,
I meant to say that John failed to make much of an impression.

    Re: The murky waters

    Perhaps:

John didn't stand out as a Member of Parliament, but he had a great career in the murky waters of lobbying.
