didn't have time to cry yet. you cry after you hit your head not during.

(While reading a book about how it's not easy being big, where there's a picture showing Big Bird hitting his head on the top of a doorway)

Child: Why is he not crying?

Parent: Well, the book is talking about how it's not easy being big. The picture is showing how Big Bird hits his head sometimes when walking through a doorway. And he just did. Now, whether or not he's going to cry later we do not know. But as of this captured moment, he just hit his head. He didn't have time to cry yet. You see, you cry after you hit your head, not during.

Do you say it that way?

    It's a bit wordy!

In the picture, Big Bird has only just hit his head. He might cry in a few seconds if it really hurt.
