    Word "blackball"

I have not seen before "blackball" in any texts I have read, but now when I looked it up in my dictionary, I would like to try some examples with my own sentences. Would you please correct my mistakes?

    1. John wanted to join a rifle-club, but they blackballed him because of his criminal conviction.
    2. Anna decided to go to court, because the golf-club had blackballed her for no apparent reason.
    3. In some countries, writers still risk being blackballed from joining the writers association, if they have "wrong" opinions.

I object to the hyphens in rifle-club and golf-club, but agree that your usage of blackball is correct.

    Re: Word "blackball"

I am wondering if it is correct to have a comma in my third sentence, as I have written, after the word "association."

    I missed that. I wouldn't use it.

In #2, had she joined the club and then been blackballed?

    Tdol,
No. Anna did not join the club. The club rejected her application, and therefore she went to court.
