I just poured some water so that you could drink the last drops of your medicine

(After the child drank his medicine from a medicine cup as shown above)

Parent (handing him back the cup after pouring some water on it): Here. Drink this water.

Child: Why is the water red?

    1. Parent: Because this is the same cup you drank your medicine on. I just poured some water in it so that you could drink the last drops of your medicine.

    2. Parent: Because this is the same cup you drink your medicine on. You couldn't drink all of the medicine because it's sticky so I put water afterwards to get the last drops.

Help. How do you say it?

    Say:

This is the same cup you drank your medicine out of.

    I would probably add:

    Weren't you paying attention?

Are you still talking to your three-year-old son?

We use "drink out of a ..." and "drink from a ..." in BrE.

I would use from instead of on.

You poured some water "in it." Not "on it."

Re: I just poured some water so that you could drink the last drops of your medicine

My idea of an answer to a three-year-old asking me "Why is it red?" is "Cos there was a little bit of red medicine left so when I added a bit of water to help you drink it, the water went red".

    He's already four.

Actually, the part I'm tripping up on is how to explain why I put water in the cup. Do you say "So that you can drink the last drops of your medicine" or "So you can clean out the last drop of medicine from the cup" or what? I mean, I want to explain that the medicine is sticking to the cup, making it difficult to drink, but I'm not sure how to go about it.

    I would say:

I want you to get the last little bit of your medicine, and the water will help it go down.
