Will taking matters into her own hands come back to burn Carrie?

Will taking matters into her own hands come back to burn Carrie?

Could somebody please explain me the meaning because I don't get it.
What does "burn" mean in this case?
Maybe something like "Will taking matters into her own hands bring Carrie back on the right track?"

Where did you see that? It doesn't look natural to me.

It certainly doesn't mean what you guessed. Burn would mean something like "destroy".

I'd say that 'burn' in this context means 'cause repercussions', probably in regards to her career or job.

The metaphor is that past actions are like putting down something hot and then forgetting it's still hot when you later pick it back up. Your past actions are causing you harm in the present.

I would take "come back to burn Carrie" to mean the same as "come back to bite Carrie in the *ss"!

In future, please give the source of any quoted text in post #1.

We shouldn't have to ask for it.

I might but Carrie doesn't even though she's a British actress in an American show.
