    Inverted sentence

    Hello Teachers,

The following sentence is from a random chapter I am working on. I was not given the book title or the author name (it happen very rarely). I am aware of this site's rules. So I am sorry that I am unable to meet them. Still, I hope that you would help me.

    Here is the sentence:

Pausing for a while to reflect came his candid reply, I would rather work alone than in a team of collaborators.

    Should this be as follows?

After pausing for a while to reflect, came his candid reply, I would rather work alone than in a team of collaborators.

    Thank you.

Do you mean in terms of not citing the source or because this may be homework?

I Googled and found the following. I believe it should help clarify the sentence for you.

I would use the second version.

    Re: Inverted sentence

You're right that the original is not grammatical. Your revision still has a problem though: as written, it's saying that the candid reply paused to reflect.

May I know why you say that? Would removing the comma fix that?

Does it not mean "His candid reply came after pausing for a while to reflect? It is just inverted, isn't it?

After pausing for a while to reflect, I can now comment further. Your revised sentence is meant to be understood as He paused for a while to reflect; then, there came his candid reply.... The original, and your revision, are textbook cases of dangling participles. You can read the page I've linked to, or this one, to learn how to recognize and avoid these common errors. (I avoided it in my opening sentence by including the subject pronoun.)

    Re: Inverted sentence

Now I understand clearly! Thanks a ton!

    Would this revision be OK?

After pausing for a while to reflect, he replied candidly, ‘I would rather work alone than in a team of collaborators.’

That's the exact sentence found in the source I cited in post #2. It is not your revised version!
