    Which way round does it make sense and can "a long time" be replaced by "long time" or "long times"?

    1 Spanish occupation of the Philippines ended a long time ago.

    2 Philippine occupation of Spain ended a long time ago.

    1 is correct. You can't use your suggested alternatives.

    You can say it ended "long ago."

    Both sentences are grammatically correct. Only number 1 is historically correct. I'd start the sentence with the definite article or write Spain's occupation....
